The Challenge

Although natural gas is an attractive and inexpensive fuel, it has one huge drawback when used in engines - unburned methane. Natural gas is often made up of more than 90% methane. When we examined the emissions of natural gas and dual-fuel engines we found that unburned methane in the exhaust is a significant problem.

According to the International Panel on Climate Change, methane has at least twenty-eight times more Global Warming Potential (GWP) than carbon dioxide. In dual-fuel engines that use natural gas, unburned methane in the exhaust causes more harm than the diesel it replaces. The reduction in carbon dioxide emissions is negated by other greenhouse gases escaping out the tail pipe.

A Better Fuel

To solve this problem, LoEmit created a fuel that offers the carbon dioxide reductions of natural gas but burns more completely in a dual-fuel engine. This dramatically reduces the GWP of engines using LoEmit fuel. Nitrous oxides and particulate matter emissions are greatly reduced in Tier 1, 2 and 3 engines using LoEmit fuel when compared to diesel-only. Inexpensive optional exhaust after-treatment solutions can reduce greenhouse gases even further.
